A long comment was posted last weekend at Free Drop - a blog about the rules of golf - about the differences between match and stroke play. The comment presents a number of areas where Match and Stroke play differ and his rationales behind those differences. The author of the blog then posted a response including a few comments on his rationales, along with some other differences.
Q: Are these all the differences between Match and Stroke Play?

The home course advantage continued as Monarch Dunes beat Marshallia Ranch 34-14. Again, the team won all but 2 team points! With 2 away matches left, a single win will secure a playoff birth. Good luck at Marshallia Ranch!

Congratulations team, on another decisive win at home against Santa Barbara Muni! The team won all but 2 team points and all but 4 individual points. There were quite a few impressive comebacks too after getting down by 3 or more holes. Good luck on our final match at home next week against Marshallia Ranch! Let's see if we can get off to a 3-1 start.

Last weekend's match against Marshallia Ranch was a good learning experience for many of us regarding the rules of match play. Before the regular season starts, make sure to check out the latest issue of FORE Magazine for USGA's new 2008 rule changes - also available here.
You can also review this helpful primer on the Basic Rules, posted by the Northern Nevada Women's Golf Association, and this Golf Rules FAQ posted at About.com. Then you'll be ready to read the Official USGA Rules of Golf.
Here are two rules of match play that several of us were unaware of last weekend.
1) If you miss a putt and your next putt is not conceded by your opponent, you cannot hole out unless you or your teammate are still furthest from the hole. If an opponent's ball is further out, you must mark your ball - even if it's a simple tap-in.
2) In stroke play, Rule 3-3 authorizes the player to play two balls when he is faced with a doubt as to his proper procedure under the Rules. This rules does not apply in Match Play (see Decision 3-3/9).
We squeaked out a win yesterday against Marshallia Ranch, 31 to 27. Skins and Closest to the Pins money should be ready on Wednesday. Great job team!
Next up is Seven Oaks Country Club from Bakersfield. We are scheduled to play them, Sunday December 16 at Monarch Dunes. We're trying to reschedule the round at their course for the end of February since our schedules are limited this month due to the holidays.
We'll post who's playing against Seven Oaks later this week. Please contact Bob to confirm your availability to play.

Starting in January 2008, a Men's team from Monarch Dunes will begin competing in matches against teams from other local SCGA member courses. These courses currently include Marshallia Ranch Golf Course, Santa Barbara Golf Club, and Glen Annie Golf Club.
An informational meeting is being held Thursday, Nov. 15 at 6:00 PM at Monarch Dunes for Men's Club members who are interested in participating. Participants must be at least 18 years of age with a continuous 2007 SCGA handicap below 18.4.
The regular season consists of 6 weekly home and away matches scheduled in January and February. Playoffs take place in March, followed by Championships in April.
For each match, the Monarch Dunes travel team will be made up of 16 golfers plus 2 alternates, including a team captain. A team of 2 players plays the opposing team of 2 players in a four-ball match (better-ball of partners) and each partner will play one individual match.
Plan to attend our meeting or contact Bob True at (805) 458-1888 to sign up or learn more.
