Another SCGA Team Play season begins in January 2010. Selected members from the Monarch Dunes Men's Club will compete in weekly matches against teams from other local SCGA member courses. Our division includes teams from La Purisima Golf Course, Marshallia Ranch Golf Course, and Glen Annie Golf Club.

The regular season consists of 6 weekly home and away matches scheduled on Saturdays between January 23rd and February 27th. Playoffs take place in March, followed by Championships in April.

In each match, a team will be made up of 16 golfers plus 2 alternates, including a team captain. Two players from each team compete in a four-ball match (2-man best ball) and each player also competes in an individual match.

We lost our final match at Marshallia Ranch 35-13. We finished the season with a 3-3 record, winning all our home games and loosing all our away games. La Purisima took first place in our division with a 4-2 record. We placed second with a commanding 154-134 overall point record. Congratulations to all team members! Overall standings for Group 7 are available here. BTW, Seven Oaks won Group 6!

We pulled out another win at home, this time in the cold rain, beating Marshallia Ranch 32 to 16. Our team has now scored 141 points versus 99 for our competition! If we win next week at Marshallia Ranch, we'll win our division and move on. Good luck to those playing!

Our Team made a valiant effort at La Purisima, with nearly every team scoring points. Our 4 point loss, 22-26, is likely the closest match La Purisima has experienced on their home course. Our overall score against La Purisima is 57-39 in our favor! Combined with our matches against Glen Annie, our team has now outscored our opponents by a score of 109 to 83! Congratulations to all the point getters on Saturday, with a special congratulations to Tim Tacy who is now 4-0 and Brian Sullivan who is 3.0. Good luck to everyone next week at home against Marshallia Ranch.

Monarch Dunes hosted La Purisima today, winning handily 35-13. The low handicappers finally it pulled it out, winning all 6 points in the first 3 groups! La Purisima was undefeated prior to our match after beating Marshallia Ranch both home and away, so this was an important match to win. In order to move on after the first round, we'll need to pull off a win at either La Purisima next week, or later at Marshallia Ranch. Congratulations to all who participated!

The Glen Annie team treated us to perfect weather on their home course on Saturday, but handed us our first loss with a score of 33 to 15. Our overall score against Glen Annie is 52-44, in our favor!

The Monarch Dunes SCGA Team started off the season with a win at home! We hosted Glen Annie on Saturday and managed to win 12 out of 16 individual matches and 6 out of 8 team matches. Our four lowest handicappers struggled Saturday, but hung in there to half one team match. Congratulations on a 37-11 win over Glen Annie.

Although we lost 23 to 25 on Saturday at Marshallia Ranch, no other team has ever come that close to winning an away match at Marshallia! The decisive blow came on our home course on Sunday where our team handily won 39 to 6 1/2, for a 62 to 31 1/2 total. That's an average of 2 points out of a possible 3 from each 2-man team! Congratulations on a great start!

We're scheduled to play home and away practice matches with Marshallia Ranch on November 1st and 2nd. We'll be at Marshallia Ranch on Saturday and Monarch Dunes on Sunday. There's still room for more players on both days so let Bob know if you're available!

A long comment was posted last weekend at Free Drop - a blog about the rules of golf - about the differences between match and stroke play. The comment presents a number of areas where Match and Stroke play differ and his rationales behind those differences.
